Censorship is gone, /r/atheism has been floating in and out of the top 10. Nothing like what was happening before has reoccurred.

And as far as I can tell this place has just kinda been forgotten about.

Note that the demo probably doesn't work in any version of IE, due to it using data: URIs. This wouldn't be an issue in a production version.

surprise, surprise. Just one more thing that makes it glaringly obvious that reddit caved in to busybodies who can't handle a topic they don't like. Hard to beleive that so many people in /r/atheism fell for spezz's bs about vote bombing. I hardly go to reddit anymore after that crap. Things look like they're back to usual over there in /r/atheism, like that mess didn't happen.

1. Is anyone still keen on this plan we've been kicking around? Or did all the talk move and I didn't get the memo? :)

2. If we're still doing this I'd like to set up the chat I spoke of here: http://reddit.subjectnull.com/wiki/index.php?title=Db2%27s_vision

I've posted a new topic on my site where I'd like to discuss moderation with the community before writing code.

http://stocks29.homelinux.net:4000/show/1208

Please submit your comments and stick around for the conversation to make sure that the moderation system that we develop is really the best of breed possible.

Remember, we are writing code, so if you want to get your opinion in there, please make sure to participate -- we'll probably start writing the moderation system in about a week.

Also, I would prefer if the conversation took place on the project site, not here, so that we can more effectively shake out bugs, and you can get an idea of how you'd like to see it change -- like opinions on where to put the moderation controls, etc.

I hope you guys join us -- we're trying to make it as good as possible, so get involved! :)

ah, i see - and i agree with your disagreement... but at some level for any good algorithmic sorting system to work, statistics are going to have to be collected. But it seems that it could be accomplished without uh watching user behavior **closely** as anything more than numerical data.

I think a good course of action would be to allow a certain number of up and down votes per day when a new account is created. This would then be adjusted by commenting and submissions. Somehow we could put together the rating algorithm in a way that good insightful submissions give more ability to vote, and over time, users that have better overall submissions might get more up and down votes and that type of thing. Obviously there would be a negative consequence for accounts repeatedly accused of trolling and the like.

@yoasif - Not sure i see how you connected your quote to your point. I agree with what he is saying, there should be an option to view the entire comment path beginning with whatever post you find interesting.

It would be good if we could implement some sort of system that can move easily up and down the entire comment tree, not based necessarily on up/down votes but on the continuation of conversation, without having to switch between pages and following links to show/hide stuff...

Links are the internet first of all. You can't get rid of em. A flagging system for possibly NSFW links is going to be the best approach to give people a good heads up.

I don't know how, but I think the moderators should have some sort of check in their power, if a moderator is going a direction the community doesn't like, the community should have the ability to remove their privileges.

OpenID actually collects less information that traditional user accounts -- for example, OpenID relying parties do not collect passwords.

All OpenID relying parties (like my site) get is your OpenID and knowing that you have logged into your OpenID provider. We don't get passwords, or email addresses, or anything else, unless you decide to submit that information yourself.

So again, when using OpenID, we aren't even storing passwords!

All of the possible interactions between members should be on the site. The useful part of email addresses is when you have forgotten a password... so, that shouldn't be removed, but perhaps not required.

It seems that a blog/reddit hybrid wouldn't be terrible honestly... I like the journaling idea, with the ability to publish posts onto the main page, as an evolution of the self.reddit posts. The best posts would remain, and those sub-par posts would disappear. It wouldn't turn into a blog site any more than reddit is, but it would be easier perhaps to follow a certain user's journal entries (if they kept their unpublished journal public).

As far as polls go, the argument against polls because of possible bias presentation is not convincing. The polls would be subject to the same down/upvoting as all the other posts, leaving the best polls around.

I believe I read something about a more nuanced voting system, and this would be great, but the simple up and down voting shouldn't be removed.

It seems a no-brainer to allow it as an option. I like usernames to be completely anonymous - all it is is a placeholder so that I know the comment posted by Pikatore today was made by the same person who posted a comment as Pikatore last week. I dislike it when registering wants to gather more information from me than username and password. Why should I have to give an email address everywhere I go? Why should I give my real name?

I like OpenID myself, but I understand DB2s objections, especially since we not are providers yet. It doesn't have to be the only authentication scheme we use. I believe in having a low threshold for participation. Username, password and captcha should be all a new user needs to fill out, but OpenID is preferred by some users and should be an available option.

How long have you been on the internet? Before 1993? :)

Before Eternal September, the internet was one big place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September

and we're just seeing a return to that -- more people on the internet just makes it more part of the overall social fabric.

Anyway, if you really want an account that is not associated with you, you can always get a throwaway openid -- no one is forcing you to use a "big" name openid name -- use whatever you want, roll your own, whatever.

"Is there any particular reason that you find OpenID to be repulsive?"

Because it treats the whole internet as though it's one big place, a big convention where you're wearing the same nametag to every booth. The internet I've always used bears no resemblance to that.

I also refuse to sign up for twitfacespace.

I'd like to check it out more thoroughly, but there's no way to make an account on the site itself.

"One wonders what words you have reserved for Dick Cheney or Pat Robertson ;-)"

I find 'biological waste' to be quite accurate while the term used in that fashion retains sufficient insultability.

Sure, but it'll have to be here. I find OpenID repulsive.

Are you saying you're going to disallow editing of user stories?

Is there any particular reason that you find OpenID to be repulsive?

As far as user stories go -- yes, kinda. User stories are not currently editable, and I'm not certain that they *need* to be editable; I expect that they will be used for bursts of ephemeral data/posts.

You may get a better idea of what I'm talking about if you actually play with the app, so you can get an idea of what I am talking about.
